Un bassin atlantique déformé / 3 jours, 800 km
A deformed Atlantic Basin / 3 days, 800 km drive

Points clés : L’itinéraire fait découvrir la partie du bassin marginal atlantique d’Essaouira-
Agadir qui a été déformée et incorporée au Haut Atlas occidental lors du plissement alpin.
L’accent est mis sur la stratigraphie du Trias, époque du rifting de l’Atlantique central, et sur
celle du Jurassique, époque où se différencie le bassin entre un domaine oriental lagunaire et
un domaine occidental marin subsident. La série crétacée-éocène du golfe atlantique est éga-
lement illustrée. Du point de vue structural, la région parcourue illustre particulièrement le
rôle de la tectonique salifère (décollement, diapirisme) avant et pendant le plissement.
Highlights : This tour presents the geology of that part of the Essaouira-Agadir Basin of the
Atlantic margin that was deformed and incorporated into the High Atlas Belt during the Alpine
orogeny. Emphasis is on the stratigraphy of the Triassic, which corresponds to the Central At-
lantic rifting process, and on that of the Jurassic, during which the basin evolved with a la-
goonal eastern part and a deep marine western part, respectively. The Cretaceous-Eocene
succession of the Atlantic gulf is also illustrated. From the structural point of view, the im-
portance of salt tectonics before and during folding is particularly illustrated.
