Discovering the Alpine belt of Northern Morocco : 6 days, 1380 km drive
Highlights : This tour (fig. 1.1) offers an overview of the Rif Belt, which belongs to the system of the
Mediterranean Alpine belts. From Rabat to Fes, the route crosses the belt foredeep (including oil and
gas prospects) and the more external thrust unit (Prerif Nappe) with its salt diapirs and its active fold-
and-thrust structures. Between Fes and Al Hoceima, the inverted North-African paleomargin is ob-
served, with its metamorphic zone (intracontinental suture), and then the Flysch Nappes originating
from the Alpine Tethys. During the trip to Chefchaouen some other outcrops of these oceanic turbidites
are observed while approaching the Dorsale Calcaire, a stack of calcareous thrust units originating
from the Tethyan northern paleomargin. The Chefchaouen-Tetuan day and the next morning are dedi-
cated to the Dorsale, which fringes the Alboran allochthonous terrane, and to the core of this terrane,
i.e. the Paleozoic Nappes, the Metamorphic Nappes, and the associated infracontinental peridotites
(Beni Bousera). Until Tanger, the route follows the south bank of the Strait of Gibraltar and crosses the
Tethyan nappes west of the Hercules Columns. The last day includes a visit of the uppermost Flysch
Nappe (Numidian Nappe) at Tanger and of the youngest orogenic deposits of the External Zones before
heading to Rabat by the highway.
From a tourist point of view, the program includes the visit of the Roman ruins of Volubilis and offers
the occasion to have a look on the Imperial City of Fes, the andalus-style Chefchaouen town, the mys-
terious medina of Tetuan, the mythic Tangiers and Asilah, appreciated by the artists.
